Alternative facts normalized by the current administration

Something unprecedented is happening in this country. Something that is an equally perplexing as it is terrifying. And it’s coming directly from the president of the United States.

What is this frightening thing that is plaguing our country? The answer is lies. More specially, the normalization and acceptance of lies that are coming directly from the White House. President Donald Trump simply can’t stop himself from lying, and neither can Kellyanne Conway, Sean Spicer and everyone else with ties to his administration.

Much of President Trump’s lying seems to stem directly from his constant need to feed his ego. Trump is a cripplingly insecure man who must defend himself and his image at all times, even if that means directly contradicting the truth.

A man with such a brittle, bruisable ego shouldn’t have made the decision to run for the job that is open to the most criticism in our country. He ran simply to prove to himself that he was the best. But now he is realizing that everyday his actions and words will be questioned and that there will be protests and dissent among the American people.

He seems scared. And when people seem scared, they put up walls and utilize their defense mechanisms. President Trump’s top defense mechanism happens to be lying.

This should horrify the American people. In the past, there would have been a large national outcry over a president lying even once to the American people. I feel certain that if former President Barack Obama had said or done the things that the current president has, there would have been an immediate uproar for impeachment.

And yet President Trump lies daily. If he can’t even tell the truth about the weather on his inauguration day, how can we expect him to be truthful and honest about issues relating to foreign affairs and national security? How can the American people possibly be informed about political affairs that effect them if they are being directly lied to?

The most dangerous thing of all is that when the media reports the truth and that truth does not agree with Trump’s agenda, he simply calls it “fake news”. That stands against the very principles our country was founded on.

The reason that our democracy is so incredible is that the Founding Fathers included rights that would prevent autocracy directly in our Constitution. The right to free speech and the right to criticize our leaders is fundamental to the lifeblood of America.  The lying and constant claims of being a victim to fake news that are coming from the White House do not respect the Constitution or the American people.

History seems doomed to repeat itself and I see America slipping into the same tyranny that the Founding Fathers fought so hard to prevent.
