Man charged with DUI after crashing into cars near UCF

A man is accused of crashing his car into multiple vehicles at an off-campus apartment parking garage near UCF.

James Edward Morris, 25, was arrested Sunday morning on one count of DUI and one count of hit and run, according to a Florida Highway Patrol arrest report. The report says the Saturday night wrecks happened after Morris was driving in a parking garage at The Marquee.

Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Kim Montes said in a Sunday email that 16 vehicles were involved in the crash, including Morris’ vehicle.

Morris refused to take a breathalyzer test or perform any field sobriety exercises, according to the release. Trooper B. J. Alfred noted in the report that Morris had bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and smelled like alcohol.  It’s unclear if Morris is a UCF student.

The report quotes an unidentified witness that says he was almost struck by Morris’ car as it passed him in the parking garage.

It says Morris told investigators during questioning that he did not remember what happened. Morris said he was at The Knight’s Pub on Saturday night and had one shot of Captain Morgan. Morris said in the report that he was later given free drinks.

After the crash, the report states Morris left his car and fled on foot. UCF security officer Gonzalez Giovanni gave chase and caught Morris. Morris later fell asleep on the floor while waiting for law enforcement, the report states.

Morris was booked into the Orange County Jail around 5 a.m. Sunday morning.
