Man shot near UCF, suspect arrested

One person was shot near UCF’s main campus on Tuesday night after physically resisting an armed robbery.

The unidentified injured 24-year-old man was taken to the Orlando Regional Medical Center (ORMC) in stable condition, according to an Orange County Sheriff’s Office release.

Leonard Patrick Jr. Hill was arrested on charges of second degree attempted murder with a firearm and robbery with a fire arm and taken to the Orange County Jail without incident, according to the release.

OCSO deputies responded to a fight in progress at 12070 Collegiate Way, which is the Collegiate Square plaza that includes shops and bars such as Stagger Inn and Shamrock Beverage & Liquors, according to the release.

The release stated Hill was disarmed and detained by a group of bystanders and later apprehended by OCSO deputies. A firearm was recovered on the scene, the release stated.

“To [UCF Police Department’s] knowledge neither the victim nor the suspect have any affiliation with UCF,” UCF PD spokeswoman Courtney Gilmartin said in an email on Wednesday.

Before the shooting, Hill first unsuccessfully attempted to rob a 19-year-old man, according to the release. That man was not injured, according to the release.

Hill was also taken to ORMC for “injuries inflicted at the hands of the good Samaritans during his apprehension,” the release stated.
