The UCF Theta Sigma Chapter of Alpha Xi Delta has been suspended until further notice after allegations of misconduct were heard at a Tuesday morning Interim Suspension Hearing at the UCF Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities Hearing Room.
The Office of Student Conduct suspended the sorority on Nov. 16 on charges of hazing, underage drinking and providing misleading or false information to UCF officials or non-university law enforcement, according to a letter from Assistant Director of the Office of Student Conduct Rosemarie Timothy.
This was in response to an incident that took place this fall at Señor Frog’s, a nearby bar and restaurant, according to the Incident Reporting Form submitted on Nov. 6 by Assistant Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life Timothy Donovan.
During the reported incident, a current Alpha Xi Delta member and big sister allegedly held a pitcher of mimosas to a non-initiated member’s mouth and told her to “chug, chug, chug,” according to a report in the letter by an anonymous sorority member accompanied by Panhellenic President Jenny Sturman.
The member who came forward said most of the little sisters were underage, and she tried to tell them they didn’t have to drink the alcohol, although “they didn’t really listen to her,” according to the letter.
The member allegedly brought her concerns to the Alpha Xi Delta executive board but the board was “upset” with the response and would now “have to deal with it,” according to the letter.
The member, who is now on probation and likely to drop her membership, also feels “retaliated against” by the sorority as she explained an incident of being held to higher standards than others at a semiformal event, according to the letter.
These allegations would violate UCF’s Organizational Rules of Conduct as outlined in the 2017-18 Golden Rule Student Handbook.
The sorority is under suspension until an investigation of the allegations has been completed, according to a letter sent after the hearing from Interim Suspension Hearing Officer Scott Eberle.
The suspension occurs during a rocky time after all Florida Greek life was put “on notice” at a Nov. 9 Florida Board of Governors meeting after the death of Andrew Coffey, a pledge at Pi Kappa Phi at FSU.
The suspension prohibits the UCF Theta Sigma Chapter of Alpha Xi Delta from participating in any fundraisers, socials, mixers, intramural competitions, recruitment and things of the like. Regularly scheduled business meetings are also suspended, according to the Office of Student Conduct letter.
